Talking Poop...

I never thought I'd blog about poop.  You know you're a mom when the conversation turns to poop or puke and it's no big deal.  A huge struggle for Zachary is constipation.  So far it seems to be because of his Hypotonia - low muscle tone.  (Click here to quick catch up on a little bit about our little guy.) It makes sense, if he has low muscle tone on the outside, that his muscles on the inside struggle too.  I have tried everything from Karo syrup to suppositories and everything in between.  Everyone is helpful and gives their suggestions and believe me, I've tried them all! I never thought getting a baby to poop would be such a struggle, and that we would get so excited when it actually happens!  When he poops on his own I suddenly get the urge to text my husband at work and tell him the good news!

Our regimen these days are an adult sized dose of Miralax in a bottle daily, a small scoop of Benefiber in his morning breakfast, special therapy tape on his belly, and we still end up using an enema about once every 10 days.  He just gets to the point where his system needs help getting it all out.

I've learned a lot through Zachary's health struggles.  A few months ago I remember crying and being so stressed over Zachary's constipation, and now it's just the way it is and I'm used to it.  I'm sure lots of things I am getting used to seem so strange for other parents.  By God's grace we get through the new struggles we are facing, even constipation.  I'm thankful for the strength and wisdom God gives me for each day.

If you know of someone who is dealing with Hypotonia in their kiddo, please send them my way.  I have much to learn from others, but am also starting to learn the ropes and may have experience to share.  I don't want to go through this alone, and I know other moms out there must feel the same way!

  1. I'm so sorry. I struggle w/my 2 yr. old son's constipation. I think his issue is related to gluten intolerance, though. I gave him milk of magnesia today, and let me tell ya....it cleaned him OUT ; ) I feel for you, I know how hard it is to figure out what works for your child. Their bodies are all so different. So, so hard!
